Distance 9 km Duration 2h 30min one way Ascent 700 meters Length Single-Day Location Murupara (Bay of Plenty) Trip Grading Fit

This track starts along the Galatea Foothills Track. It climbs steeply to 1017m with an elevation gain of 700m in a distance of 9km. Time approx 2 ½ hours one way.

Update May 2025

Turn right at 526 Troutbeck Road, Galatea, then drive parallel to the tarsealed road, on a metal road to the end at a carpark.

The DOC information Centre near Murupara has had the toilets removed. No Toilet at the parking area either, now.

The plank ‘bridge’ across the river has been washed away or removed. Wade through the river at the usual access point at the end of the carpark. The river banks are now steeply eroded by recent heavy rains, but are still manageable. Dense blackberry makes other access points difficult.

The times of 2h30min each way are correct. Two good tables with seats are positioned about 45 mins up the track. Halfway point is marked in blue on a large tree on the left side of the track.

This is a very rooty and steep track but the views of the Bay of Plenty from the trig at the top are well worth the climb.

We don't have any past trips at the moment.
