A hard, 20km out-and-back walk involving over 1,000m of ascent taking 5 – 7 hours which can be done on even a very wet, rainy day. Going outwards beyond 2 hours or so involves some serious downhill meaning a bit of a grunt on the return. The path is pretty good most of the time though there are one or two slightly tricky bits due to windfalls and / or streamline crossings. The superb forest offers good shelter and the surface of the path is clean and relatively dry – there is little or no mud! This is a superb forest area and there are some large trees still standing plus some of the artifacts from logging days can be seen.

There are a few more fallen trees to navigate after the destruction last year caused by Cyclone Gabrielle. Nothing was particularly difficult. The track remains as beautiful as ever and is a good 7 hours return.
