Waikato Waihohonu Springs

A relatively long, slightly taxing walk of 5-7 hours over almost 20km. From the car park near the desert highway into the Waihohonu Hut is an easy, if somewhat boring, walk. From the Waihohonu Hut there is a bit of a climb up the Oturere Track but the slope eases once the path is left and the NW ridge running up to Tama is followed. No track here but the footing is pretty good with a gentle down-slope sidle to reach the springs. The route out can be the reverse of inwards or a bit of bush bashing, with stream crossings, down the Waihohonu Stream then up to meet the Oturere track and back to Waihohonu Hut.
