Waikato Opureke Track upper Matakuia

The Opureke Track commences 10 minutes up the vehicle track from the Waipunga Road accessed from SH5. The track climbs to the ridge, then sidles most of the high points before descending into the Matakuhia Valley. Turning north on to the Matakuhia Valley Track one traverses slips and log jams before arriving at the Upper Matakuhia Hut. From there the track is well defined up to the end at the Matakuhia Saddle. 22kms return
